Metra modifies Wednesday schedule for extreme weather

A Metra train pulls into the new Heritage Corridor platform Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, in Joliet, Ill.

Due to the extreme cold weather forecast for the Chicago area on Wednesday, Metra will be operating on a modified schedule.

The schedules are designed to provide adequate service for the predicted ridership, according to a news release from Metra. It will also reduce the use of mechanical equipment and the number of moves through switch points on the railroad, thereby minimizing opportunities for service disruptions. Riders are advised that travel times will increase due to speed restrictions that reduce the maximum speed for Metra trains to 60 mph when the temperatures drop lower than 10 degrees below zero.

The schedule for Thursday was yet to be determined as of Monday, but Metra will notify riders as soon as the decision is made.

The modified schedules will be posted at metrarail.com.
