Facing a tough road to state finals

Wrestlers who are competing in this weekend’s Class 3A Joliet Central Sectional realize that qualifying for next weekend’s state finals in Champaign will be difficult.

The Joliet Central Sectional is as challenging as any in the state. It begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday with the second round starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and the finals at 2 p.m.

Here’s a breakdown by weight class of individuals who are favorites to qualify for next weekend’s individual state finals at the University of Illinois State Farm Center in Champaign.

106 pounds: Moline’s Charlie Farmer (40-1), Plainfield North’s Jacob Macatangay (31-3) and Lockport’s Kaleb Thompson (16-3) are in the top 10.

113: Belleville West’s Josh Koderhandt (38-2), Providence’s Jake Lindsey (18-4), Bradley-Bourbonnais’ Austin Spacht (30-5) and Andrew’s Luc Valdez (30-6) are ranked.

120: Edwardsville’s Noah Surtin (44-1) and Lockport’s Matt Ramos (28-3) are the favorites, while Plainfield South’s Enzo Silva (37-6) also was ranked.

126: Lockport’s Anthony Molton (39-3) beat Marian Catholic’s Travis-Ford Melton (23-5) in the Andrew Regional. Neuqua Valley’s Denis Murphy (30-10) and Lincoln-Way West’s Javen Estrada (32-4) also are ranked.

132: No one was ranked.

138: Edwardsville’s Luke Odom (43-1) is the favorite, while Providence’s Josh Ramos (36-6) also is ranked.

145: Plainfield South’s James Pierandozzi (26-4) and Lincoln-Way West’s Payton Geigner (34-3) are ranked.

152: Marian Catholic’s Reece Heller (43-2), Yorkville’s Joe Roberts (33-3) and Joliet West’s Jeremy Pullen (34-5) were in the top 10.

160: Lockport’s Baylor Fernandes (28-4), Quincy’s Hunter Yohn (39-2), Belleville West’s Logan Johnson (36-4) and Plainfield South’s Jake Kendall (31-6) all are ranked.

170: Neuqua Valley’s Jacob Boumans (34-3) is the favorite.

182: Yorkville’s Nick Stemmet (35-3), Lincoln-Way East’s Nick Mihajlovich (42-2) and Lincoln-Way West’s Jacob Cronk (31-5) are ranked.

195: Yorkville’s Ben Stemmet (31-6) is the favorite.

220: Providence’s Ryan Boersma (39-5), Edwardsville’s Josh Anderson (31-3) and Yorkville’s Brady Fisher (20-4) are in the top 10.

285: Plainfield South’s Andrew Bejarano (40-2), Minooka’s Drew Gutknecht (32-2) and Moline’s Cobie Underwood (31-8) all are ranked.
