A Joliet man crashed his car after attempting to evade the police by speeding away, authorities said.
About 10 a.m. on March 12, Will County Sheriff’s deputies saw Eric Lanier, 35, of the 500 block of Grant Avenue in the area of Brandon Road and Patterson Road.
They tried to conduct a traffic stop using emergency lights and sirens, Kathy Hoffmeyer, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said in an email.
Instead of stopping, Lanier increased his speed and violated traffic laws, Hoffmeyer said, and eventually crashed his car in the 1000 block of Helen Avenue.
Hoffmeyer said Lanier was arrested and charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, reckless driving, aggravated speeding, disobeying a traffic control device, disobeying a stop sign, and fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer.
Hoffmeyer said Lanier also had active Will County arrest warrants.
Lanier remains in custody at the Will County jail. His bond was set at $650,000.
Lanier goes by the nickname “Pooh,” according to jail records.
On March 13, an assistant public defender was assigned to Lanier’s case.
