Lewis volleyball beats Purdue Fort Wayne in 5 sets

Lewis University’s seventh-ranked men’s volleyball team won the opening two sets against 13th-ranked Purdue Fort Wayne in Thursday’s Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match and then had to win in the fifth set to prevail, 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12, and extend their winning streak to 11 matches. The Flyers (18-4, 9-0) were led by Matt Yoshimoto (38 assists, 11 digs), Ryan Coenen (15 kills, nine digs), TJ Murray (10 kills), Kyle Bugee (eight kills, nine digs), Tyler Mitchem (six kills) and Michael Simmons (nine digs). Lewis plays its final road match of the season Saturday when it faces 15th-ranked Ball State.

LEWIS UNIVERSITY

Lewis Hall of Fame inductees: Lewis University will induct former student-athletes Beth Bayser (women’s cross country and track and field), Chris Doran (men’s soccer), J.J. Furmaniak (baseball), Katie Gilman (women’s volleyball), Uno Lapimaa (men’s tennis) and Jim Whitesell (men’s basketball coach) into the Lewis Athletics Hall of Fame on March 28 as part of the third annual Flyer Red Dinner.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Joliet Central 18-25-25, Shepard 25-23-17: The Steelmen won their season opener at home. Leading the way for Central were Ashawn Pitchford (eight kills, four digs), Kolby Thompson (seven kills) and Luis Cisneros (24 assists).

Lincoln-Way West 25-25, Plainfield East 11-13: The Warriors were led by David Flores (28 assists), Ben Pluskota (12 kills), Louden Moran (12 kills, two aces), Nico Studer (six kills) and Tyler Vedder (five digs).

SOFTBALL

Wilmington 9, Clifton Central 3: Katie Kucharski went 4 for 4 with five RBIs and collected the win, and Michelle Gramlich had four RBIs for the Wildcats.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Lincoln-Way West 15, Waubonsie Valley 5: The Warriors (10-1-1) were led by Delaney Janosek (eight goals), Josie Torres (three goals) and Sera Lange (two goals).

BOYS WATER POLO

Shepard 12, Lincoln-Way West 8: The Warriors (3-4-1) fell to the Astros.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

St. Francis 8, Purdue Northwest 4: The Saints (11-11) improved to 7-0 on their current homestand. USF used a four-run first to put it in front for good. Leading the Saints were Adam Cibulka (2 for 4, three RBIs) Anthony Faron
(3 for 4, two runs) and Travis Schoonover (2 for 5). Evan Doan allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings to get the win.

Moraine Valley 12, Joliet 8: The Wolves (2-7) were led by Jimmy Patock (double, three RBIs) and Zack Lauras (two RBIs).

MEN’S TENNIS

St. Francis 7, Elmhurst 2: USF got singles wins from Avilash Mishra (No.1), Miguel Rayos del Sol (No. 3), Fernando Turiel (No. 4), Thomas Shieffer (No. 5) and Oscar Tellez (No. 6). Turiel and Rayos del Sol also won at first doubles.
