College sports area roundup: Flyers volleyball advances to MIVA semifinals

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University’s seventh-ranked men’s volleyball team swept Quincy to open play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (23-5) host the MIVA semifinals at
7 p.m. Wednesday against fourth-seeded McKendree (13-12), which won, 3-2, against Ball State.

No. 1-seeded Lewis had a .508 hitting percentage. Julian Moses finished with a match-high 12 kills, and Mitch Perinar added nine kills. Matt Yoshimoto handed out 35 assists, and Michael Simmons had seven digs.

On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Loyola beat Ohio State, 3-1, and third-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne won, 3-0, against Lindenwood.

MEN’S BASEBALL

Lewis University swept a doubleheader over Rockhurst, 12-11 and 7-6. In Game 1, Austin Tittle had three RBIs and Anthony Cavalieri scored four runs.

In Game 2, Anthony Rios had three RBIs, and Blake Marks went 61/3 innings to get the win.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

The University of St. Francis (23-9) swept Trinity Christian, 15-0 and 9-1. Leading the way in Game 1 were Ashley Galason (four RBIs), Lindsey Andrews (three RBIs), Kayla Garcia (three RBIs) and winning pitcher Madisen Tucker (three hits allowed).

In Game 2, Galason (three RBIs), Andrews (two RBIs) and winning pitcher Hannah Vachon (four hits allowed) were among the leaders.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Lewis University won its third straight meet after scoring 143 points at the Benedictine Relays.

Lane Kadlec won titles in the shot put (14.97 meters) and the discus (42.9). Ashleigh Macleod won the 800 in 2:13.41, Kassady Learn took first in the 1,500 at 4:49.85, Cierra Pulliam won the long jump (5.92), Anna Laudizio took first in the triple jump (11.72), and Kianna Clark tied for second place in the hammer throw (52.16).

The University of St. Francis’ Brittany Bodnar won a title in the hammer throw (53.36), while Celina Mayforth took second in the 200 (25.73) and third in the 400 (58.09).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Lewis University took fifth at the Benedictine Relays. Fargo Thornton was second in the hammer throw (48.6) and third in the shot put (14.88). Other thirds were Chaz Sales in the 110 hurdles (15.89) and long jump (6.79) and Michael Lyons in the high jump.

The University of St. Francis also took part in the Benedictine Relays and took the top two spots in the 200 with Moses Biosah (22.26) beating teammate Kenny Brown (22.37).

Brandon Ruffin won his second straight invite title in the 110 hurdles (14.99).

MEN’S GOLF

Lewis University’s men’s golf team won the title at the Illinois Springfield Invite with a 288 total, as Hunter Pipik (68) was the medalist, and Cole Elmore (72) tied for third place.
