Monarch butterflies migratory patterns show they have reached Will County. The district has been able to track the butterflies' migratory patterns from Mexico.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County announced this week that monarch butterflies have landed.

The district has been able to track the butterflies’ migratory patterns from their winter home in Mexico in real time through an online map via Journey North. The map collects data from citizen scientists from across the country to put together a migration map, according to a news release.

The district said the monarchs are “right on pace” compared to their movement during 2018, when they were first spotted May 8 in Will County in Lockport.

Suzy Lyttle, an interpretive naturalist, explained that each year’s migration can vary depending on weather conditions the delicate butterflies experience.
