New Lenox police arrested a suspect in an Indiana homicide investigation Wednesday morning near Interstate 80 and recovered a gun from his vehicle.
New Lenox police were made aware about 2 a.m. Wednesday that someone had been killed in Griffith, Indiana, a few hours earlier. They also were told that a suspect in the case might be visiting a friend in New Lenox, according to a news release from the New Lenox Police Department.
Juan Guerrero, 41, of the 800 block of North Lafayette Street, Griffith, Indiana, was thought to be driving a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and a suspect in the death.
New Lenox Officer David Nykiel found a vehicle about 2:17 a.m.
traveling on Lincoln Highway near Interstate 80 who had matched the given description.
Nykiel with officers Andrew Dowding and Andrew Johnston conducted a traffic stop and took Guerrero into custody without incident.
Police also recovered a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol from the passenger-side floorboard of the vehicle.
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana responded to the New Lenox Police Department to continue their investigation and obtained an arrest warrant for murder Thursday.
Guerrero has been transported to the Will County jail, awaiting possible extradition to Indiana.
