Construction on Interstate 55 south of Arsenal Road, over the BNSF railroad and Grant Creek in Will County, will begin Monday, requiring parts of the highway to be reduced to one lane.
Northbound I-55 will be reduced to a single lane to allow for the effective widening of the shoulders, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Once the shoulders have been widened, the highway will be reduced to a single lane in both directions, and the southbound bridge will be closed. Bridge deck repairs will also take place.
No detours will be posted, but it is recommended to take Interstate 80 and Illinois 47 as an alternative.
The work is anticipated to go until late November. When the construction is finished, I-55 will return to its usual four lanes. Next spring, the work will continue.
The project is projected to end in fall 2020. Traffic updates can be found at travelmidwest.com.
