The 15th annual John Whiteside Memorial Golf Outing is set for Wednesday, in remembrance of the legendary Herald-News columnist.
Whiteside died more than a decade ago.
“The plight of military veterans provided Whiteside with prime column material during decades of interaction with Herald-News readers,” former Herald-News sports editor Dick Goss wrote. “He never missed a chance to further their cause and increase readers’ appreciation for what veterans mean to our freedom.”
Along with former U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller, Whiteside worked to establish the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad to honor deceased service members who were honorably discharged. Starting in 2005, the annual fundraiser for the memorial squad has been the John Whiteside Memorial Golf Outing.
The group provides a free military burial service for veterans.
The outing will be at the Inwood Golf Course in Joliet. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Cocktails will be served starting at
2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, at 250 SE. Frontage Road in Joliet, with a cash bar and dinner at 4 p.m. The golf and dinner package costs $95. Dinner alone is $25.
