Equipment issues that were expected to delay a construction project on Interstate 55 near Arsenal Road were resolved early, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
One northbound lane of I-55, south of Arsenal Road and over the BNSF railroad and Grant Creek in Will County, will be closed starting at 5 a.m. Monday, IDOT said in a release Wednesday.
The lane closure was originally scheduled to take place June 17 but was pushed back to early July, because of equipment not being delivered on time. IDOT once again announced the timing had changed Wednesday and moved the start date up to the last week of June.
Northbound I-55 will be reduced to a single lane to allow for the effective widening of the shoulders, IDOT previously said. Once the shoulders have been widened, the highway will be reduced to a single lane in both directions in early August, and the southbound bridge will be closed. Bridge deck repairs also will take place.
It is recommended to take Interstate 80 and Illinois 47 as an alternative.
The work is expected to go until late November. Next spring, the work will continue.
