July is National Bison Month, and there are activities for all ages to learn about bison – and the prairie ecosystem that is essential to how they live. Celebrate and learn about America’s National Mammal, the bison, with the USDA Forest Service – Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

• Design and Create a Pet Place Mat – 10 a.m. to noon, Frankfort Public Library District, 21119 S Pfeiffer Road, Frankfort. Learn the basics of using a Silhouette Cameo to cut a variety of images. Staff will laminate. All materials provided. Call 815-534-6173 or visit frankfortlibrary.org.

• Prairie Stories Chalk Art –10 a.m. to noon, Noon, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Iron Bridge Trailhead, Wilmington. Draw a bison in chalk, hear tales about animals that live on the prairie, share animal stories, create chalk art on the sidewalks in the Welcome Center gardens. Ages 5 to 10. Call 815-423-6370.

Bison Hikes – 11 a.m., Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Iron Bridge Trailhead, Wilmington. Ranger-guided hike to look for the bison. Learn about Midewin’s unique past, present and future in a fun and interactive way. Call 815-423-6370.

• Pet Fest & Car Show – Noon to 9 p.m., 700 Theodore St., Joliet. Many animal rescues, silent auction and 50/50, animal product vendors, low cost vaccine clinic, car show, food, beer garden, raffles, kids section with face painting and cold blooded creatures, DJ and bands. • Family Pet Photo Day – 2 to 4 p.m., Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook. Bring your pooches, felines and other cherished family members to have their photo taken.
