Underwood bill to improve medical screenings of migrants at southern border

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, introduced legislation to ensure appropriate medical safeguards for individuals apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. Border Patrol Medical Screening and Standards Act would require standardized processes and training to ensure consistent medical screenings, according to a news release.

Underwood invoked the photo of a father and his young daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande River to call for better conditions for migrants crossing the border.

“It wasn’t the first time we’ve seen the horror of the humanitarian crisis at our border, and I saw it for myself when I went to the border this spring,” Underwood said in the release. “What is happening is unacceptable.”

Underwood added she voted last week for the $4.65 billion in funding for DHS to address the situation at the border. She also supported more than $1 billion in additional funding back in February.
