A 17-year-old was gunned down early Sunday morning on Joliet's East Side and a 15-year-old was charged with his murder.
About 6:15 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 600 block of Chase Avenue after receiving a report of shots fired, Joliet police said on the department's Facebook page.
Officers found Alejandro Mendoza, 17, of the 1900 block of Foxborough Way in Joliet inside a vehicle near the corner of Elwood Avenue and Creed Street, police said. Mendoza had been shot, according to officials.
Mendoza was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and was then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he succumbed to his injuries about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy had not yet been performed Monday.
The officers reportedly also found that a residence in the 600 block of Chase Avenue had been struck by gunfire, police said. Officers located a loaded firearm and arrested a 15-year-old, police said, and detectives determined the teen was responsible for shooting the car in which Mendoza had been found.
The 15-year-old was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, Will County State's Attorney spokeswoman Carole Cheney said.
The teen was being held at River Valley Juvenile Detention Center and his next court date was scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 19, she said.
"This is an ongoing investigation and is still in its early stages. The Joliet police is actively looking into what occurred and will update the public at a later date when it has more information," the police department's Facebook post said.
Any residence or business with surveillance videos of any suspicious activity between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. Sunday was encouraged to contact Detective Michael Cagle at 815-724-3035 or the Investigation Unit at 815-724-3020.
"The area of focus is from the area east of Collins Street to the rail yard and between Williamson Avenue and Jackson Street," police said.
