Three Channahon police officers were injured early Sunday as they investigated a man who appeared to be driving under the influence, according to a news release from Channahon police.

Police responded about 2:45 a.m. Sunday to Thornton’s Gas Station, 24144 W. Eames St., Channahon, to investigate a handicapped parking spot violation, according to the release.

When police arrived, they spoke with Darell T. Leverson, 25, of the 4700 block of West Maypole Street, Chicago. Officers reportedly saw an open alcohol container in his vehicle and could smell alcohol. They also learned that Leverson’s license has been suspended, according to the release.

Police tried to persuade Leverson to exit the vehicle, but he reportedly refused, according to the release. Then, with officers at his driver’s side window, Leverson reportedly put the vehicle in drive and drove it into a plastic-covered cement barrier, causing significant damage to his vehicle, according to the release. He then allegedly put the car in reverse and backed up over “stop sticks” police had put into place. Leverson reportedly drove forward into the cement barrier again before officers deployed a Taser, according to the release. Police then took him into custody. He was not injured.

Two officers were treated on the scene for injuries, and a third was treated and later released from Morris Hospital, according to the release.

Leverson faces multiple charges, including aggravated resisting and DUI. He was booked into Will County jail.
