1968 Olympian John Carlos to speak at Fairmont event

John Carlos, the bronze medal winner who delivered the Black Power salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics, will speak Saturday as part of "A Salute to Fairmont Community Athletes."

Carlos will speak at 7 p.m. at Fairmont Junior High School, 735 Green Garden Place, Lockport. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained at eventbrite.com.

Carlos joined fellow Olympic medal winner Tommie Smith in giving the Black Power salute during the awards ceremony.

"An Evening With John Carlos: From the Podium" is one of three Fairmont events.

A golf outing will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Broken Arrow Golf Club, 16325 Broken Arrow Drive, Lockport. Tickets for golf and the meal are $72 and also are available at eventbrite.com. A Sunday morning worship service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 18101 W. Oak Ave., Lockport.
