“They did not live there for long,” Jim Gutierrez, Anthony’s son, said. “He grew up in a house on Ward Street. It was very close knit, down in that area.”
Anthony spent 40 years as a teacher, first at Washington Junior High School, eventually teaching industrial arts at Joliet Central and Joliet West High Schools and the former Joliet East High School, Jim said.
He also served as assistant principal and then principal at Joliet Central High School, Jim said.
In addition, Anthony was instrumental in starting the computerized drafting program (CAD) at Joliet Township High School District 204. Jim said his father was an interesting man who was never afraid to tackle new projects.
“He was very proud to be a teacher, very proud to work with the kids and be a teacher,” Jim said. “In fact, anywhere we went out to eat, people would come up to him, students or fellow teachers at the school. He always remembered their names and would stop to talk with them for 10 or 15 minutes. He always remembered everybody.”
