Will County Board members to host town hall on gas tax in Plainfield

In this June 11, 2013, photo, a motorist puts fuel in his car's gas tank at a service station in Springfield. The possibility of a new countywide gas tax has riled up some elected officials and residents. Through the $45 billion capital bill it passed in the spring, the state legislature allowed Will County to implement a gas tax as other Chicago area counties were already able to do. The County Board can pass a gas tax of no less than 4 cents and no more than 8 cents, from which nearly all the revenue would go directly to the county for roadway construction projects.

Will County Board members in the Plainfield area will host a town hall meeting Oct. 29 on the proposed countywide gas tax for residents.

All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend the free, informational session about the tax and hear from the Will County Department of Transportation. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions.

The Will County Board has been debating whether to implement a 4- to 8-cent gas tax across the county, which is estimated to generate an additional $12 million to $24 million in revenue. The state legislature allowed the county to do so with the passage of its $45 billion capital program.

County board members representing Districts 5 and 13 will host the town hall. Gretchen Fritz, R-Plainfield, and Meta Mueller, D-Aurora, represent District 5, and Mark Ferry, D-Plainfield, and Tim Kraulidis, R-Joliet, represent District 13.

The town hall meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Prairie Activity & Recreation Center, located at 24550 W. Renwick Road in Plainfield.
