Coroner: Teen struck, killed by freight train

Autopsy by coroner was scheduled for Wednesday

A 17-year-old was struck by a train and killed Tuesday night in Plainfield, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Officers were dispatched to the railroad tracks near 135th Street and Route 30 about 7:30 p.m., Plainfield police said.

“Upon arrival, officers observed the train stopped and located a subject near the tracks with major injuries,” police said. “The Plainfield Fire Protection District and later the Will County Coroner’s Office responded to assist.”

The coroner’s office said Skyler J. Williams of Plainfield was pronounced dead at 8:51 p.m. Tuesday at the railroad crossing at 135th Street.

Plainfield Fire Protection District Chief Jon Stratton said firefighters arrived on the scene with the police.

Stratton said the 113-car train that was carrying crude oil, lumber and other cargo was traveling south on the tracks and initiated a stop immediately after Williams was struck.

“As soon as it happened, it hit the brakes,” he said.

He said the train was able to come to a complete stop about 1,400 feet after Williams was struck.

Stratton said firefighters and police walked the tracks until they found Williams, who had already died.

Plainfield police are investigating the incident, the coroner’s office said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday at the Will County Morgue, according to the coroner’s office.

The final cause and manner of death will be determined pending a final review of police, toxicology and autopsy reports, according to the coroner’s office.
