Amazon’s two fulfillment centers in Joliet, totaling 1.2 million square feet, have 3,500 employees. The 850,000-square-foot facility going up in Monee will employ 1,000 workers. The company has said it could employ anywhere from 400 to 800 workers with a peak of as many as 1,000 during the holiday season at the 438,000-square-foot Crest Hill building.
Some economists forecast that although there is a shock wave of hiring in the area, and many other areas across the nation, it won’t last forever. Amazon operates with about 20 percent automation, and as technology advances, that percentage likely is to increase.
But by then the company might have more technical jobs than it does now, and those jobs pay higher.
“There are so many opportunities opening up,” Noak said. “Engineer, design, conveyor systems, management, HR – it has helped raise the bar. This region has become a net job creator, and that means people are looking to us to come here and work, buy homes and live.”
