County officials said the $215 million courthouse is being built without tax increases.
The 365,000-square-foot courthouse will have 38 courtrooms. The structure is being built at the southwest corner of Jefferson and Ottawa streets.
Will County Board Member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, chair of the Capital Improvements Committee, compared the future courthouse with the existing Will County Courthouse just east of the site.
"When they built it, it probably seemed very big and very large," Tuminello said. "Little did they know that in 50 years Will County would grow to 700,000 residents."
The current courthouse, built in 1968, has four floors and 23 courtrooms. The county population at the time was about 250,000, Tuminello said.
