Blankenhorn also said the state has not been ignoring Joliet and surrounding communities.
He noted a number of local projects, including the Interstate 55 interchange at Arsenal Road, which Blankenhorn said was the most expensive interchange in the state.
Lanes also have been added to local sections of I-55 as well as I-80 east of U.S. 30.
The state also is spending $21 million for a new I-80 interchange at Houbolt Road, which is tied to a bridge project to be built over the Des Plaines River by CenterPoint Properties to give trucks more direct access to the interstate.
Mayor Bob O'Dekirk, who was at the meeting, emphasized the public-private investment arrangment for the Houbolt Road bridge project.
"That," O'Dekirk said, "appears to be the way these projects are going to be done in the future."
