"I see the struggles and challenges my fellow veterans go through every time I go to the James Lovell Medical Center for my medical care as I talk to them," Sefcik said in an email. "They tell me their stories of when they were in the service from the Korean War and the ones that are back from their second or third tours from Afghanistan or Iraq or the ones that are getting ready to deploy."
Sefcik herself joined the Navy after graduating from Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox. Now living in Wheeling, Sefcik is proud of her family military background, including being a Navy spouse for 15 years.
"I also come from a very long line of military background," Sefcik said in an email/. "Just to mention a few: a fifth great-grandfather in the Revolutionary War, with two second great-grandfathers being in the Civil War, an uncle in Iwo Jima while another Uncle Adam Tymowicz [Illinois] shot down over France during WWII only to be MIA in the Korean War, my father Thomas [Illinois] being in the Navy, to me following in my father’s footsteps," Sefcik said in an email.
And why bicycling? Because Sefcik enjoys it.
