After high school, Janice attended Joliet Junior College and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign in 1966. She taught third grade at Lockport Elementary School from 1966 to 1967 and kindergarten at A.O. Marshall from 1967 to 1973.
Once her children started school, Janice volunteered in the library at Eisenhower Academy, served as room mother and chaperoned all field trips. When Brad joined the Joliet Grade School Band in 1982 as a clarinet player, Janice took on the role of fitting, repairing, cleaning and ordering many new uniforms, a role Janice continued when her daughter, Mayme Studer of Joliet, joined the band, too.
“She was always willing to do whatever needed to be done,” Brad said.
Mayme said she and Brad sometimes helped their mother in keeping the uniforms in good shape.
“She’d pay us to help her take buttons off the old ones,” Mayme said. “And she went on every band field trip we ever went on.”
Two years later and keeping the above role, Janice began serving the Joliet American Legion Band and was secretary for 11 years. When Brad and Mayme joined the JTHS band, Janice became a band parent. In 2011, Janice helped found the JTHS Band Alumni Association – and served as treasurer.
But Janice’s dedication to the band went beyond those duties.
