Students and staff at Troy Heritage Trail Elementary School had an interesting school year with a 7-foot toy polar bear they named, “Oreo.”
The lifelike bear was offered up to Troy School District 30-C’s principals last summer by a Board of Education member whose church had used it during its Vacation bible school.
Heritage Trail Assistant Principal Mark Leipart was the first to respond, and the school now has the bear as a prominent member. He lives in the school’s library.
Each month, groups of staff members dress Oreo up to the delight of the students. The popular bear has sported Abraham Lincoln attire, was a Minecraft Creeper bear, posed with an extra-large cold drink and cold weather gear and was clothed to be a Mark Leipart look-alike. The students’ favorite was Oreo-Vader, a takeoff of Star Wars’ Darth Vader.
