Connor argued that once a municipal water system was privatized, residents wouldn’t have control over it if the company decided to raise rates. Despite Connor’s efforts to defeat the bill, it passed, and Gov. Bruce Rauner signed it into law in August.
Connor said he heard from constituents in other communities with private water systems who told him they had experienced rate increases upward of 16 percent.
He said that a lobbyist for Illinois American Water told him that number was off and that he would get him better numbers, but Connor said he hadn’t received any new numbers at that time.
Fairmont resident DeLinda Herod, who’s lived there for 45 years, said she’s concerned that privatizing the water system would add one more headache for her neighbors.
