Infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure
Whether it's the continued problems on Interstate 80 or numerous Will County residents standing up to stop industrial parks they fear would bring truck traffic, infrastructure has been and will likely continue to be a top political issue.
Infrastructure is a central topic of conversation in several facets of public life, especially in the realms of economics, safety and politics. The incoming governor said it's a priority for him. Both businesspeople and everyday residents agree: Investment is needed.
Then there is the issue of truck traffic. NorthPoint Development's controversial Compass Business Park was defeated in Elwood when the mayor canceled a vote on approving the rezoning of land for it. The decision came after massive mobilization from locals, who were upset and concerned over the prospect of more trucks on their roads. NorthPoint later took its project to the Will County Board, which is likely to make a decision this year.
