Kay and Bob were married in 1965. They made and arranged toparies in the aisle before the service and Bob created Kay's wedding bouquet.
"It was Amazon lilies and ivy and it was gorgeous," Kay recalled. "It came down almost to the hem of my dress.
They had two sons (Leonard of Palatine and Will of North Carolina) and worked for a variety of floral shops until the 1970s when they they opened their own, Bo-Kay Shoppe in Palatine.
The couple mentored other floral designers, traveled quite a bit doing floral shows and belonged to various floral wire services, Kay said.
"It's just something we had a real passion for," Kay said. "You have to be born with it. You can't tell someone how to bend and curve a calla lily if they don't have some sense of artistic knowledge or feeling when it comes to this."
