Dee knows her mother liked to cook and made the traditional Eastern European dishes on Christmas Eve – mushroom soup, bean soup and kolachke. Clara prepared turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving.
"She made a lot of homemade soups, beef soup and chicken soup," Dee said. "The big thing now is bone broth. That basically is the soup she used to make. And she cooked whole chickens with the bones and the gizzards. I think she had a lot of patience."
"I remember her at nighttime tucking me in bed and then reading my Golden books. I always had banana curls because Shirley Temple was the big thing and all girls had banana curls. She always dressed me really nice. She was just a caring person, a loving person."
Dee knew her mother liked vacationing in Northern Wisconsin, trips built around John's love for fishing. Clara kept a garden – tomatoes, string bean, cucumbers.
"She did a lot of canning," Dee said. "We had a really nice orchard and we'd have peaches, pears, apples. She canned all that."
