Child killed in car accident in Elwood

ELWOOD – An 8-year-old girl died Tuesday evening when a minivan collided with a semi-truck on Route 53.

Madison Frost was riding in the third row passenger seat of a white 2010 Dodge Caravan being driver by her mother, Tina Frost, 36, of Crest Hill, Police Chief Fred Hayes said. Maria Frost, 15, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman also wereriding in the Caravan.

"They had just left the Silver Dollar restaurant when the minivan pulled out from eastbound Mississippi Avenue to make a left turn onto Route 53. The father of the family was in a second vehicle behind them and witnessed the crash," Hayes said.

Hayes said a passing citizen and an Elwood police officer performed CPR before paramedics arrived to take Madison to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 6:47 p.m.

Maria Frost was listed in critical condition and was being transferred to Christ Hospital from Saint Joseph late Tuesday. Tina Frost remained at Saint Joseph in serious condition, according to reports.

The other passengers, who police identified as an adult couple, also were listed in serious-to-critical condition at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox Tuesday night.

There is a stop sign for traffic on Mississippi Avenue at the Route 53 intersection.

The driver of the 2012 Volvo semi-tractor trailer, Lehi Resendiz-Montalvo, 47, of Bensenville, refused medical treatment at the scene, Hayes said.

The semi-truck was traveling in the curb lane when the crash occurred, Hayes said. Illinois State Police crash investigators were reconstructing the accident Tuesday night.
