One dead, three injured in I-55 crash near Romeoville

ROMEOVILLE – A Romeoville man is dead after a crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 55 just south of the Weber Road exit.

Walter J. Martineck, 47, was driving a delivery truck at 2:43 p.m. Wednesday northbound on I-55 when the truck rear-ended a semitrailer, according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

The collision caused the semitrailer to crash into a car in front of it, according to Illinois State Police.

Martineck was pronounced dead a little after 3:40 p.m. Two people in the semitrailer and one person in the car were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, ISP Master Sgt. R.A. Caves said.

All northbound lanes of the interstate were shut down as police investigated the circumstances of the crash. All lanes were reopened just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
