Joliet Catholic tennis opens with win over Plainfield East

JOLIET – The Joliet Catholic Academy opened its boys tennis season Monday with a 4-3 nonconference victory over Plainfield East.

Jack Geissler and Henry Jones won in singles and Jared Hippman-Jordan Missig and Nick Ruff-Chris Mueller won in doubles for the Hilltoppers.

Plainfield East winners were Gautham Yerneni in singles and Tyler Urbanski-Andrew Rogers and Spencer Napawoski-Jacob Garbe in doubles.


Lincoln-Way West fifth: Lincoln-Way West finished fifth at the Argo tournament after beating Reavis, Richards and Hinsdale South. The Warriors (8-1) fell to Plainfield North 25-17, 25-18.


USF 5-3, Indiana-South Bend 3-6: St. Francis (18-17, 3-8) won the opening game and held the lead through six innings in the CCAC nightcap before Indiana-South Bend (16-13, 8-4) rallied to gain a split Sunday at Silver Cross Field.

In Game 1, Saints sophomore pitcher Kevin Mampe (Lincoln-Way Central) earned a complete-game victory and went 4 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs.

He allowed three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out five. Nick Fleischauer (Minooka, JJC) singled home a run. CJ Duffek singled and doubled.

In Game 2, USF led 3-0 after six innings, but the Titans took advantage of errors to score three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.

Rick Faron gave the Saints a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first inning and USF added a run in the second when Duffek and Mampe pulled a double steal, with Duffek scoring.

Cori Herbert faced the minimum through four innings and held the Titans hitless through 42/3. He left in the seventh after giving up back-to-back doubles.

Dan Darling (Coal City, 3-2) relieved and took the loss.


Lewis third: At Mountain Home, Arkansas, Lewis finished the first day of the Southern Bancorp Invitational with a 297 score.

Alex Thode fired a 71 and is third overall.

Robert Dofflemyer III and Jack Korzon each shot a 75. Ryan Ballard shot 76 and Andrew Grant 82. Playing as individuals, Trent Smith shot 77 and Trace Moustakas 80.

Host Henderson State leads with 285.
