JOLIET – People seem to love food trucks, and people seem to love nature.
So the Forest Preserve District of Will County all summer has combined residents’ love for both with a series called “Food Truck Fridays,” where a select few mobile kitchens stop by a district preserve on Friday evenings and serve up their signature dishes.
Trucks set up shop four straight Fridays in June at Whalon Lake in Naperville. In July, they headed to Hickory Creek Barrens Nature Preserve in New Lenox.
Throughout August, starting Friday, they’ll be at Lake Renwick Preserve in Plainfield. Friday’s lineup features Carnivale and its Latin fusion menu, as well as Ugly Truckin Sandwiches and Rogue Curbside Kitchen both making return trips.
The events have been so popular thus far that the district moved the event location from the Turtle Lake Access at the preserve to the Plainfield Township Access at 22525 W. Lockport Street, which will allow more space for the trucks and residents to park.
An average of 400 people have attended each of the nine events so far, according to the district. Lines were so long at the first Whalon Lake outing they have made sure to add more trucks the rest of the summer.
Aug. 11 will feature Toasty Cheese and their gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, as well as Shrimp Shack. Cupcakes for Courage also will be serving up sweet treats.
The Fat Shallot will be making sandwiches Aug. 18, as well as Venezuelan-inspired Latin American street food truck La Cocinita. Cupcakes for Courage will also be there.
Lastly, on Aug. 25, The Roaming Hog will be serving up its pork-centric cuisine, while Argentinean food truck Grumpy Gaucho stops by and Cupcakes for Courage returns again.
“Food Truck Fridays” is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. each Friday in August.
