NEW LENOX – A 33-year-old semitrailer driver from Wheeling died Tuesday after the truck he was driving rolled off a southbound Interstate 355 ramp and into the ditch below.
New Lenox firefighters and Illinois State Police responded about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday to the I-355 southbound ramp to Interstate 80 in New Lenox for a single-vehicle crash with injuries, police and fire officials said in separate news releases.
Serghei Balint, 33, of Wheeling, was driving on the ramp when the truck’s load shifted. The shift caused the truck to roll over the concrete wall and down into the ditch. The truck appeared to be dangling off an embankment.
Balint succumbed to his injuries at the scene, according to a news release from the Will County Coroner’s Office. The coroner’s office and Illinois State Police District 15 continued to investigate his cause and manner of death Tuesday.
Another person involved in the crash was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Their condition was not disclosed. Police and fire officials closed the ramp for several hours Tuesday to investigate the cause of the crash.
