JOLIET – The local Toys R Us store eluded a round of store closings.
Joliet also has a Toys R Us warehouse that apparently will keep operating, although the future of the company is in doubt.
The retailer announced closing sales Wednesday at 144
stores, including six in Illinois.
The Illinois stores
are in Matteson, Highland Park, Schaumburg, Vernon Hills, Niles
and the Bricktown
shopping center in Chicago.
Toys R Us, which has 880 stores, filed for bankruptcy in September.
In addition to the Toys R Us store near the Louis Joliet Mall, the company also has a warehouse nearby on Hennepin Drive.
The company did not respond to an email seeking information about the status of the Joliet warehouse.
Local officials said they did not have any information about the company’s plans for the warehouse.
John Greuling, president of the Will County Center for Economic Development, speculated that the warehouse would stay open amid the store closings.
“As long as they have to fulfill product to the remaining stores, they will need those distribution centers,” Greuling said. “That’s a very good warehouse at a very good location.”
