JOLIET – Are you ready to take the plunge?
The 2018 Joliet Polar Plunge will be Saturday at Leisure Lake. The money raised through the event will go to benefit the Special Olympics of Illinois, according to a news release.
To participate in the Polar Plunge, teams are required to collect a minimum of $100 in donations. A team consists of at least five plungers and are encouraged to come in costumes. Teams can win prizes based on how much they raise.
The plunge is the single largest year-round fundraising program benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. It has raised more than $47 million over 32 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics athletes and their accomplishments.
There also is a Polar Donut Dash 5K held in conjunction with the Polar Plunge. The news release said this is the only 5K that tests participants’ speed and their ability to eat donuts. There are multiple donut stops along the route and runners will receive a minute deduction on their time for each donut they consume.
Check-in for the plunge begins at 10 a.m. at 21900 SW Frontage Road in Joliet.
