LOCKPORT — Troopers from Illinois State Police District 5 investigated a double fatal traffic crash on a Lockport bridge Monday.
The accident occurred a little after 1 p.m. on the Ninth Street Bridge east of Illinois Route 53, according to a press release.
According to state police, the accident involved two vehicles, a Ford truck and a Chevy SUV. The two killed in the crash were in the Chevy SUV. The driver of the truck was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
A preliminary investigation found the SUV was traveling eastbound and crossed into the westbound lane and struck the truck head-on, police said. The press release did not list any charges in connection with the accident.
The names of both victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. State police said more information will likely be released on Tuesday.
All lanes of traffic were shut down in both directions of the bridge for about three hours. The bridge was expected to be shut down for several hours. State police encouraged motorists to avoid the area.
All lanes were opened at 4 p.m. on Monday.
