JOLIET – Amy Montiel of Lockport typically is disappointed when she visits Mexican restaurants.
“[I] want a place with authentic Mexican food,” Montiel said.
She plans to offer just that when her new restaurant, Catrina’s Mex, opens in May. The business will fill the vacancy the Olde Keg left behind at 20 W. Jackson St. in Joliet – her right place at the right time, Montiel said.
The Olde Keg has been closed for several years, but many favored the tavern for its pizza.
Montiel and her family live in Lockport but frequently dine in Joliet – where she sees a need.
“[We] want to open a really nice restaurant, where you can go to celebrate your birthday or take a brunch with your family,” Montiel said. “We want to bring people from other towns – that’s our goal.”
Much of the menu will feature more traditional Mexican food, such as Mexican meatballs, but diners also will see what “they’re used to,” including burritos and tacos.
Montiel said she wants the restaurant to be a family place and hopes to open within the next month.
