State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, announced the upcoming construction of a 210-bed in-patient Illinois Department of Corrections treatment center Tuesday.
The new facility will be located immediately west of the Joliet Treatment Center on McDonough Street, which was previously called the Illinois Youth Center-Joliet, according to a news release from McGuire's office. A new administration building will connect the facilities.
The $150 million project will provide round-the-clock treatment to male and female offenders with the most severe mental illnesses, the release said.
Construction will employ up to 200 union members and is expected to be completed in mid-2021, according to the release. Upon completion, the center is projected to employ 445 people, including psychologists, nurses and security staff.
"The co-location of the In-Patient Treatment Center and the Joliet Treatment Center puts Joliet at the forefront of a new era of criminal justice and public safety," McGuire said.
