A Crest Hill man has been charged with aggravated battery in a public place and battery causing bodily harm, according to court records.
About 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gabriel A. Oertel, 22, of the 1400 block of Berta Drive, Crest Hill, was taken to the Will County jail on the charges.
Oertel was arrested on a warrant issued by a Will County judge June 19. On Wednesday, he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His bond was set at $50,000, of which 10 percent is needed to post bail.
Oertel also is facing charges of resisting a police officer and aggravated battery to a police officer, which were filed against him by the Will County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. A court date has yet to be scheduled.
On Sept. 24, 2015, Oertel was charged with criminal damage to property, battery causing bodily harm and battery by making physical contact. On March 8, 2016, he pleaded guilty to battery by making physical contact.
He was sentenced at the time to conditional discharge, fined $500 and ordered to pay about $312 in restitution. He also was ordered to undergo anger management counseling from AMT Counseling.
On June 14, 2016, Oertel failed to appear in court, and the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to revoke. The petition was withdrawn March 6 when Oertel appeared in court, and his case was closed.
