An overturned semitrailer caused backups in both directions Friday morning on Interstate 55 near Channahon.

Illinois State Police Trooper DeAnn Falat warned motorists to avoid the area of Bluff Road and I-55 if possible about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

The left lane of northbound I-55 was blocked, Falat said.

Traffic appeared to be backed up past Arsenal Road to the south and to Interstate 80 to the north. Just after 8 a.m., Falat reported a second crash on southbound I-55, also at Bluff Road.

All lanes reopened about 11:40 a.m., Falat said.

State police could not immediately provide more information about how the crashes occurred or who was involved in the incidents Friday.
