Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, along with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and Forefront, will host a discussion about the 2020 Census.
The census is taken every 10 years and is the federal government’s way to acquire an accurate count of the country’s residents. The count also will dictate the boundaries of federal, state and local districts, as well as the distribution of federal dollars.
According to a flyer on the event from Senior Services of Will County, the state could lose a significant amount of the federal money Illinois receives annually, about $19.7 billion, if the census is not accurate. They are specifically concerned about certain populations that historically have been difficult to count in the census, such as immigrants.
The discussion will take place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Senior Services of Will County, 251 N. Center St.
