Kristin Garcia of Mokena said she grew up helping her mother Barb Siwinski with events and fundraisers at St. Coletta's of Illinois at Tinley Park, which serves people with developmental disabilities.
"I liked the way it made me feel about myself," Garcia said. "I felt proud of myself that i could help other people. And I felt important, that i could make a difference."
Garcia said her four children, Josh, 7; Lucas, 6; Anabella, 4; and Jake, 2, also helped Garcia and Siwinski with projects before Siwinksi retired as director of fundraising. Garcia feels volunteering will help her children develop important skills: leadership, communication, empathy.
"I feel that's one of the reasons why we homeschooled," Garcia said. "To have the opportunity to help as many people as possible."
