Lipinski: I have been a commonsense Democratic leader

Now that two challengers have officially announced they are running against U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, in 2020, the congressmen is beginning to make his case to be elected for the ninth time.

Lipinski touted his record on job growth, improving local transportation, and protecting health care, the environment and education affordability.

“I am running for reelection to build on what I have accomplished to improve the lives of middle-class families in the 3rd District and our nation,” Lipinski said in a statement. “I have been a commonsense Democratic leader who has brought people together to solve problems.”

Lipinski has modeled himself as a moderate who gets things done in Congress while his opponents, Chicago attorney Abe Matthew and La Grange resident Marie Newman, who ran against Lipinski in the primary, have modeled themselves as more progressive alternatives.

Newman argued that Lipinski’s positions are out of touch with the residents of the 3rd Congressional District. On his website, Matthew said he supports paid family leave, expanded public preschool, universal health care and advocating for the rights of immigrants, women and LGBTQ people.

In both 2014 and 2016, Lipinski was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Newman ran against Lipinski in the 2018 primary and lost by a little more than 2,100 votes, or about 2% of the vote. Lipinski then soundly defeated Holocaust denier Arthur Jones in the 2018 general election by a two-to-one margin.

The 3rd District includes all or parts of Crest Hill, Homer Glen, Lemont, Lockport and Romeoville in Will County, and stretches to the Southwest side of Chicago near Midway Airport.

Lipinski added that it was still early in the electoral process and that he’s focused on “providing the best possible representation for all my constituents.”
