Romeoville woman killed in I-55 crash

16-year-old driver could not stop in time: police

A Romeoville woman was killed in a crash Saturday on Interstate 55.

Michelle McCombs, 58, was pronounced dead in the AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

McCombs was the driver of a vehicle heading north on I-55 and was rear-ended near mile post 252, about a quarter mile north of Route 59 in Troy Township, according to the coroner's office. The other vehicle, driven by a 16-year-old, was traveling on a curve at the location and saw McCombs's car stopped partially in the left lane, according to Illinois State Police. The other driver was unable to stop and struck McCombs's vehicle.

The 16-year-old was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to state police. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday. State police are investigating.
