Why was Luangsomkham selected: The Steelmen senior badminton player not only earned her second-straight appearance in the IHSA Badminton State Finals but also won the singles championship after rallying from a first-set defeat to claim a 19-21, 24-22, 21-10 victory over Oswego East's Crystal Hwang in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional finals match.
Herald-News sports writer Curt Herron talked with Luangsomkham.
Herron: How did it feel when you won your first sectional title?
Luangsomkham: I proved that I am good enough to compete against the girls who have a lot more training and experience than me but I can still come through and take the title.
Herron: What do you like the most about badminton?
Luangsomkham: I like the physical and mental challenges that it brings. It's very similar to playing chess and I'm on the chess team at my school, and I think that helps out.
Herron: What do like about competing for the Steelmen?
Luangsomkham: Often times we're underestimated and they don't really know how good we are in general and they really see us a threat to threat to them.
Herron: Who's your favorite sports team?
Luangsomkham: I'm a big fan of all Chicago's sports teams.
Herron: Who's someone that you would have liked to meet?
Luangsomkham: Abraham Lincoln.
Herron: What's your favorite food?
Luangsomkham: I like Laotian food.
Herron: What's your favorite social media site?
Herron: As a musician, what kind of musical style do like the most?
Luangsomkham: That's hard since I'm a musician and I play the violin and the piano.
Herron: What's your favorite movies?
Luangsomkham: I really love Disney movies, especially the classics.
Herron: Where is the favorite place that you've been and where would like to go?
Luangsomkham: I really enjoy going to Florida and being at the beach. And Laos.
