Congressional candidate for the 3rd District Marie Newman received five endorsements from progressive organizations in her race to challenge incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs.
In an email, Newman’s campaign announced that the political action committee EMILY’s List, the pro-abortion rights advocacy group NARAL, Planned Parenthood, the public policy advocacy group MoveOn and the Progressive Campaign Committee all endorsed the challenger from La Grange.
“That’s not just huge – it’s nearly unprecedented for a challenger’s campaign 10 months out from the primary,” according to the email. “These endorsements ... aren’t just a stroke of good luck. Dan Lipinski has spent his career voting against working families, choice, against equality, against immigrants and against access to health care.”
Newman narrowly lost to the eight-term incumbent in the 2018 primary and announced earlier this year she would challenge him a second time.
Lipinski, a centrist, anti-abortion Congressman, responded on social media saying the endorsements “make clear that she is again running a ‘tea party of the left.’ ”
“This type of campaign, along with Ms. Newman’s hateful, Trump-like rhetoric, her penchant for spreading falsehoods ... and the #MeToo issues from her 2018 run she has still yet to address, will once again be rejected by voters,” Lipinski tweeted Tuesday.
The 3rd Congressional District includes all or parts of Lockport, Crest Hill and Romeoville.
