Over time, Abigail sank to "a really, really dark place." Abigail insisted she was ugly, no matter how much Lois insisted otherwise.
On Face The Future 2019 Appeal video, orthodontist Dr. Ronald S. Jacobson said Abigail's upper jaw was so far behind her lower jaw, it interfered with eating and speaking.
Face the Future Foundation supports the care and treatment of children with craniofacial differences, along with research and education, according to its website at facethefuturefoundation.org.
One day, Lois asked Abigail if she ever considered harming herself. Abigail's "yes" lanced Lois' heart.
"I felt that my world had fallen," Lois said. "And that at any point, I could lose my daughter."
Lois said she made changes in the home to protect Abigail. And she appealed to members of Spring Creek Gospel Hall on Gougar Road in Joliet, where the Pike family attends church, for prayers.
