A tow truck driver preparing to haul away a semitrailer parked at a Rockdale gas station discovered a dead body in the sleeper area of the cab Thursday afternoon.
A tow truck was removing semitrailer parked overnight at the Mobil station near the corner of Larkin and Moen avenues when the body was found, Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra said.
“It looks like it’s natural (causes),” Dykstra said. “No signs of foul play.”
The truck cab was locked from the inside, Dykstra said.
The tow truck driver jimmied the door so he could get inside and secure the steering wheel, he said, and then found the body in the back.
“He’s been here awhile,” the chief said.
The Will County Coroner’s Office dispatched personnel to the death scene.
Dykstra said a driver’s license and prescription medication bottles bearing identical names were found in the truck cab.
The dead man appeared to be in his 60s and may be a resident of Dolton, Dykstra said. He also said it appeared the man may have been a truck driver who was living in the semitrailer cab at the gas station between jobs.
Paperwork found in the cab
shows the man last had a driving job March 14, the chief said.
“He very well could have been there since then,” he said.
The coroner’s office had yet to release the dead man’s identity by mid-afternoon Thursday.
