Metra announced that it will increase summer weekend service as a pilot project on two lines, and the Rock Island line.
The Rock Island line starts in Joliet and goes through New Lenox, Mokena and Tinley Park, and ends at LaSalle Street Station in Chicago. The line will have six new inbound and outbound trains for hourly Saturday service, according to a news release. There are no changes to the Sunday service schedule.
“Our goal with these new summer weekend schedules is to give our customers along these lines more options and make it easier than ever to ride Metra to the Chicago area’s many summer events and attractions,” Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski said in the release.
Metra also has $10 weekend passes and free trips for children 11 and younger.
According to Metra, in a recent survey of passengers, a majority of respondents said they wanted more frequent service, as well as faster service, when asked, “Which improvements would cause you to use Metra on the weekends more frequently?”
With these summer schedules, Metra is testing whether faster and more frequent service will increase ridership and revenue on weekends.
