Eventually Raymond and her partner split. But Raymond's relationship with drugs flourished. In 2004 Raymond went to jail for drug possession. At the time of her sentencing, Raymond was not using, she said.
"I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant," Raymond said. "But the judge felt that, for the safety of the baby, I'd be incarcerated until I had the baby."
Raymond said she was in the day room of the Will County jail around the 11 p.m. shift change on May 25, 2004, when she suddenly felt "all wet." Raymond thought her "water had broken."
Until she saw the blood.
"The emergency response team got down there and saw the blood and said it looked like a crime scene," Raymond said.
Tom was part of the ERT. The plan was to send Raymond to "medical" at the jail, but Tom felt she was going into shock and needed a hospital.
"I went to my superior and told him what was going on and that I thought she should go to the hospital. He agreed with me," Tom said. "I didn't want to have her and the baby dying on my conscience. Better safe than sorry."
